Indian Head Massage...
After my having attended every class and seminar in recent years, I try to remember that for all the education and training I can ever receive, the one true
expert during any treatment is the client laying on the couch or seated in the chair.
Always remember that the treatment is about YOU...It is for you to enjoy. If the massage is too hard, say "softer;" if it is too soft, say "harder." If you do
not like the music, or prefer no music at all, say so. Your silence indicates to me that you are pleased, but feel free to talk during the treatment if you wish.
Head massage originated in India over a thousand years ago. The origin of the word shampoo comes from a Hindi word 'champi'. Being 'champi-ed'
meant having your head massaged. It began as the way to keep one's long hair in healthy & beautiful condition and has become a part of daily life.
Massage is probably the oldest therapy known to man, and has been practised in the Far and Middle East for at least 5000 years. The beneficial effects
have been acknowledged for generations, and massage is a part of everyday activity, performed within the family from a very early age.
Indian Head Massage works on both physical and mental states. It focuses on the upper body, back, shoulders, neck and head, i.e. the areas most
vulnerable to stress and tension. It is a wonderful and beneficial programme for de-stressing the whole body. It disperses toxins from tense and knotted
muscles, improves blood-circulation in previously congested muscles, and helps oxygenate the brain. It also assists with eye-strain, tinitus, jaw-ache,
sinusitis, stimulates lymphatic drainage and aids sleep. Indian Head Massage induces a state of calm, peace and tranquillity and promotes high levels of
alertness and concentration.
An Indian Head Massage generally starts with the client sitting in a comfortable chair for the duration of the massage. The upper back needs to be
exposed, therefore a "Tank" top can be worn, or a towel wrapped around the body to afford the healer access.
Treatment normally begins with a deep kneading and probing of the upper back, shoulder and neck muscles. At times similar to Osteopathy but with
no crunching or cracking of joints. The head is then worked with the scalp being squeezed, rubbed, gently tapped and prodded. The hair is briskly tussled
and gently combed. Pressure points are gently worked on and the ears are tugged and pressed. Lastly the practitioner moves to the face, working with
acupressure points to help relieve any sinus pressure, stimulate the circulation and increase alertness. The face is also very gently stroked.
An Indian Head Massage lasts approximately 45 minutes, depending on the needs of the client.
Once a massage has been completed the client should remain at rest for at least 10 minutes and drink a glass of fresh water.
